SONAR X3 now supports the VST3 format, and it finally detects new plug-ins when you first bring up the program—two upgrades that bring SONAR much more up to date. New instruments include a full version of Addictive Drums, which sounds considerably better than the older Session Drummer plug-in and allows for tons of tweaking. It has a built-in mixer and effects, so you can assemble complete drum kit sounds inside of it, much in the same way you can with Logic Pro X's Drummer plug-in or third-party tools like Toontrack EZdrummer. There's also Lounge Lizard Session, a Rhodes emulator, and Strum Acoustic Session, a physically modeled acoustic guitar instrument with nylon and steel string options, plus plenty of strumming samples and a real-time tablature view.As before, you get a full version of Dimension Pro, Cakewalk's multitimbral workstation synth plug-in that covers all the bread-and-butter sounds you'll need for most productions. But now you get the full version of Rapture, a stellar virtual analog synthesizer packed with excellent-sounding presets and tons of knobs. Other features: There's a per-track arpeggiator, which is something I wish every DAW had. The mixing board looks sharp and also works well for the most part, although again, you need plenty of screen real estate to see enough of it. Finally, there's Gobbler, SONAR X3's new integrated cloud backup and sharing solution. You get 5GB free with SONAR X3. It's pretty simple; you click G at the end of the day, and it backs up the entire project to the cloud. The one downside I still see on the composition side is the Staff view; its feature set for editing notation and lyrics is significantly behind what you get with Cubase 7, Digital Performer 8, and even Pro Tools (which got a huge boost back in version 8 thanks to a Sibelius-based engine).
Otherwise, I've never had any major issues working in SONAR. SONAR X3 contains enough built-in instruments to act as an excellent, self-contained studio program from start to finish. For example, I put together a chill-out style track using nothing but instruments and plug-ins that come with the program. I didn't feel at any point like I needed to use third-party plug-ins. Thanks to ProChannel, I was able to add some warmth and tube-style saturation to many of the tracks, as well as polish off the entire track as a whole. I've also scored many computer and mobile games over the years using earlier versions of SONAR, so I was familiar with the program to begin with. But now I feel like I could stay entirely within Cakewalk's environment and not be at a sonic disadvantage.
Sounds like a Good Deal
If you're buying a full-featured DAW for the first time, SONAR X3 Producer Edition offers plenty of value. Avid Pro Tools remains our favorite, and the standard across professional recording and post-production studios, while Apple Logic Pro X now takes the crown for extreme value on the Mac side. Steinberg Cubase 7 is an especially tough comparison. It costs the same, is stronger on the MIDI editing and scoring side, supports VST Expression, and is available for both PCs and Macs, so you'll have less of an issue sharing projects across multiple machines. But Cubase 7's UI can also be confounding to some, particularly thanks to its new mixer, and it requires hardware copy protection, which is a deal-breaker for many. But if you've got a PC—and especially, if you've ever used Cakewalk software before in the past 20+ years—give SONAR X3 Producer a hard look.
